Discrete Mathematics as A Transitional Course
نویسندگان
چکیده
CS educators have paid a great deal of attention to Discrete Mathematics over the past several decades. Although there have been many suggestions for improving this course, it seems to us that the real purpose of Discrete Mathematics as a transitional course has been long forgotten. We believe that the most important objective of this course is to let students be familiar with the format and structure of rigorous mathematical arguments for their future study in CS. What subjects should be taught are also important because they are tools for us to effectively achieve the objective we just mentioned. Thus, we argue that complicated subjects should not be used in this transitional course because they will distract the student’s attention from the underlying structure of the arguments that we want to emphasize. In this paper we start with some prevailing misconceptions in the effort of improving this course, and then we provide our solutions.

Numerical algorithm for discrete barrier option pricing in a Black-Scholes model with stationary process
In this article, we propose a numerical algorithm for computing price of discrete single and double barrier option under the emph{Black-Scholes} model. In virtue of some general transformations, the partial differential equations of option pricing in different monitoring dates are converted into simple diffusion equations. The present method is fast compared to alterna...
متن کاملA first course in discrete mathematics
Bargaining with reading habit is no need. Reading is not kind of something sold that you can take or not. It is a thing that will change your life to life better. It is the thing that will give you many things around the world and this universe, in the real world and here after. As what will be given by this a first course in discrete mathematics, how can you bargain with the thing that has man...
متن کاملFrom the Principle of Bijection to the Isomorphism of Structures: An Analysis of Some Teaching Paradigms in Discrete Mathematics
This paper is concerned with the teaching of Discrete Mathematics to university undergraduate students. Two to three decades ago this course became a requirement for math and computer science students in most universities world wide. Today this course is taken by students in many other disciplines as well. The paper begins with a discussion of a few topics that we feel should be included in the...
متن کاملFINITE-TIME PASSIVITY OF DISCRETE-TIME T-S FUZZY NEURAL NETWORKS WITH TIME-VARYING DELAYS
This paper focuses on the problem of finite-time boundedness and finite-time passivity of discrete-time T-S fuzzy neural networks with time-varying delays. A suitable Lyapunov--Krasovskii functional(LKF) is established to derive sufficient condition for finite-time passivity of discrete-time T-S fuzzy neural networks. The dynamical system is transformed into a T-S fuzzy model with uncertain par...
متن کاملWeb-based Implementation of Discrete Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics at Iowa State University teaches a freshman-level Discrete Mathematics course with total enrollment of about 1,800 students per year. The traditional format includes large lectures, with about 150 students each, taught by faculty and temporary instructors in two class sessions per week and recitation sections, with about 35 students each, taught once per week by a ...
